A tenager taunted from the age of five about his weight and looks, finally snapped and battered one of the bullies to death with a pool cue.

The attack was so savage spots of blood were spattered yards from the body, a court heard yesterday.

Tommy Kimpton had endured years endlessly teased about being fat and ugly before the 19-year-old at last could stand no more.

He invited Ben Williams, 17, the bullies' ring leader, to his home and viciously attacked him.

Though what the kid did was wrong, why did no parents, teachers, or authority figures notice the bullying after all these years. I think that they should wake and and realise that over weight and disbaled kids e.t.c are prime targets for bullys and should keep an extra eye out for anything ... for people not to do this then things like this are bound to happen.

I understand were he is coming from as I was bullied from age 5-10 (According to the idiots at that school I had the "cooties") every day. However my parents knew and I swiched schools. I saw a doccumentary and apparently Ben Williams was a popular, kind person loved by everyone.
Its obvious Kimpton was jealous of Ben.

I've just been reading your comments. i was Bens Girlfriend, tommy's mate. Ben wasn't a ringleader and tommy and ben grew up together, he thought o tom as a very good and close mate and never let n e 1 say a bad word against him. yes we called him the odd name and tommy called us names too it wasn't anything but a bit of fun. Tommy wanted me to find ben that night and called me to go and meet them. he's a very very cleaver young man and he rapped the whole court room around his little finger and got away with murder. What he done was sick. Ben was still alive yet he laid down next to him until he died. Thats plain nasty dirty murder and he should root in hell for what he's done instead he has a yr until he's free to mix in our community again. He's tried it before and WILL do it again.

I have just watched the chn4 doc about Tommy and Ben. My feelings are that no one knows, or will ever know exactly what went on between those two. They were very young lads who enjoyed been rebelious with drink and drugs etc. Ben probably didn't think what was been said was hurtful as Tommy probably gave as good as he got, but some people take things to heart and they can play on your mind, they build up and then come out one way or another, unfortunatly for Ben and Tommy it came out in death. None of us can really understand. I really feel for Ben, his family and his friends, he looked like someone I would have been mates with, at the same time Tommy would have been a mate of mine too! No matter what anyone did, they did't deserve to die, people at that age need to learn to talk to each other and say if things are hurting them, your true friends WILL understand, I know!

also just saw the documentry. found it very moving.

it sounds like Tommy was a rather messed up young man. he didnt seem to understand that sometimes people do take the mick out of each other.

and on the other hand Ben obviously didnt realise that sometimes he took it too far.

reading some old newspaper articles ben was pictured as a 'ringleader' but in the documentry there was footage obviously showing he was a funny 'class clown' type of person.

his friends were still very upset by his death but they just need to remember that they were very lucky to know him, no matter how short a time he lived.

I also saw the documentry this morning. Although I don't know anyone involved I can identify with them. Some people aren't mentally equipped to deal with constant verbal & mental abuse. I am not saying his actions are in any way excusable, but a drug & alcohol user with an obvious personality disorder & a documented history of violence should have been given the help he needed long before he commited the crime.

i watched the documentary yesterday and i really feel for bens friends. This really made an impact on me. I know that from just watching this we can never really know what was happening to tommy however from what i saw it was just 'boys' friends do that. It came accross as teasing not bullying. Fair enough some people can not take it due to their mental state etc. But killing is just too far. What a waste of a life! The way this situation has been portrayed in the article is not fair no one knows how much he was teased but to refer to ben as the 'ring leader' and a 'bully' is wrong. Also, the fact tommy might be up for parol next year somehow does not seem right to me either he does not need to be let out or sent home if he is not going to stay in jail for killing someone due to the fact he was "bullied" then he should at least go to a hospital as he obviously needs lots of help. I would really like to get in contact with one of bens friends from that documentary... if anyone knows anyway that is possible please let me know. Thank you.

Im new to this site and after seeing this story on the tv i decided to read up on it.
Fair enough..yes we all know bullying is wrong..I have been bullied for years.
Being called various names like "goth".But Ben Williams did not deserve to die..Tommy could have simply told him face to face and personally that he doesnt like it.
There was no need to kill a boy with his whole life ahead of him.
This story really upset me and made me have a new outlook on the way i live.

i think that people need 2 read up on a subject like this.. after the documentary i think people realised that ben was infact a good friend of tommys and not a bully like he has been made out to be i know a couple of friends similar to ben and tommy and i know that one of them gets taunted a bit but noone expects he will take it seriously it has put things in perspective for me and i will definatly think about what i say in the future as such an incident has torn apart many peoples lives my thoughts are with bens family and friends he did not deserve to die. but tommy has also lost his life through this and im sure he is suffering too.. saying this i dont believe that he should be let free so soon after the attack as 3 years is not an adiquite sentence he obviously needs help and i dont think allowing him back into a comunity where he will obviously not be accepted again is the best way to help him and may only lead to another incident like the horrific one on the 20th may 2004. rip ben xx

nobody deserved to die, thats a sick thing to say how dare you? i dont know enough about the circumstances to really comment on tommy: but i believe he will genuinely feel terrible and regret it whether or not it was premeditated murder.theres no way he should be allowed back into his hometown, its for the best tommy lives his life far away from that place. what happened has happened and nobody should persecute or "wish death" on tommy, i'm sure it will haunt him every day for the rest of his life...
