Nuance Brings Voice Recognition To Mobile Phones

Nuance, the makers of the Dragon Naturally Speaking, the voice recognition software that I have been using recently, have demonstrated voice recognition software for mobile and embedded devices.

The company has two very different products: one allowing mobile devices to type SMS messages, e-mails and documents, and another for embedded gadgets, such as in-car systems and GPS. Ford and FIAT have licensed this technology.

Nuance’s software managed to beat out existing world champion texter, Ben Cook, at entering: “The razor toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human” in a time of just over 16 seconds, well under half Cook’s time of 42.2 seconds.

Being able to dictate rather than type would encourage more people to use SMS and would cut down the risk of ruining your thumbs. Sure you could just call the person but texting is so much more easier.

i use sms when i dont feel like talking. now if i had to speak to have my sms typed out, then that defeats the purpose. thats a feature i wont be excited about.

Sounds interesting. Will it dial the number for you? I have a touch screen (MDA) type of cell phone that makes dialing a new number while driving very difficult (two hands operation). I'm looking for voice recognition software that I can say the phone number that I'm wanting to call and for it to dial the number for me.
