Beer Tubes

A while back I posted about a bags of beer that were available in China. AWV reader Y.B.Lee has sent me a link to a place in China that is selling beer from tubes. It looks like the tube is carried to a table and the beer is then dispensed. I hope it's cold.

I've seen this in Bangkok too.

Typically, you'd get one of these for a table of 4-10 people. That one looks like 5-6 liters, so for 10 people that would be 1 pint each. The extra thermal mass, and lower surface area, of 5 liters together rather than in 10 separate glasses will help to slow down the warming process.

The beer also goes faster, as people try to get their 'fair share' of the amber liquid.

I've seen this in Newcastle (UK) about five years ago...

I think the tube holds about a gallon of beer - it lasted about 10 minutes for our party of around 10 people :-).

Fortunately it was a freebie from the restaurant (whose name I can't remember, but it was run by the brother of one of our party)

This stuff is pretty usual in Germanys and Singapores clubs/bars. They are called "towers" and if you are out with buddies its even more common to get you one of these then a single beer.
You also get them with everything else, Wodka-Orange, Whiskey-Coke...etc...but be careful and dont drop them, you loose not only one pint but five at one time :))

They're pretty common in France too.

Whe I worked there in 2000, they were in lots of bars and called Giraffes.

Having just come back from working in China for six weeks, I can tell you that, unless the bar has a lot foreign visitors, the beer is warm. I was working about two hours west of Shanghai in the city of Kunshan and the bar owners that wanted the foreigners money soon learned to keep some of their Tsingtao beer in the frigerator. By the way, Tsingtao beer is excellent and I wish it were available here in Pennsylvania.

You can get this in Boston too. Sunset Grill and Tap. They have like 60 beers on tap and you can get one for your table in any knid on tap

Bought a few in Moscow with friends a few years ago while watching Denmark beat England :)

I've experienced this in a ski resort in the alps, 8 pints was the size and they pour it from the tap (as they would a pint of beer) so it is cold (as long as you don't leave it too long)...

These are in the US now. I drank one in a bar in Akron, Ohio. The company of where the got them from is BeerTubes.com. There site is pretty neat. They have a ton of different models to choose from. Loved drinking from it at Barley House ...
