My first impression was looking south at Florida, with the Keys sticking out like a stinger and the Gulf & southern Louisianna closer in. But it looks too irregular for Florida, and I don't think that state has mountains. So my 2nd guess is that we're looking south on the Baja penninsula.
Thats a really old pic from NASA, but still one of the best.

It definitely the Cook Straits between New Zealand's North and South Islands, looking north.
