Video: Camp Okutta - A Dream Camp For Kids?

AWV reader Susan, has sent me this video that is causing a stir in Toronto, Canada. The advert shows a camp site for kids that features them at a shooting range, trying to cross a minefield and practicing throwing grenades. The advert was commissioned by War Child Canada and was designed to draw attention to the plight of more than 250,000 child soldiers around the world.

Angry parents were outraged with the advert which only reveals that it's fake when you visit the website.

Sarah Heywood told CBC News that she flew into a rage when she saw the ads on Queen Street West.

"It just brought up so much anger in me," Heywood said. "I immediately thought, wow, this is real, this is happening, people are now actually providing these kinds of services and opportunities for people who actually allow their children to go and experience something like that here in Canada."

She said she was so upset that she ripped down all the Camp Okutta signs that she encountered during the afternoon, "until my fingers were actually sore from tearing at the tape and ripping them off."

Heywood said other people on the street, including a group of teenagers, were also removing the posters. When she arrived home, she visited the camp's website and discovered the camp was part of a new War Child Canada ad campaign.

The energy and anger spend on ripping apart a very good and impressive (obviously) marketing campaign can better be spend on fighting the cause: in this case adult f***heads using tiny kids for warfare purposes. Isn't it just really really dumb to go crazy against a good cause ???
