This type of fishing is called Noodling. It is legal in four or five states and it is for catching large catfish. Their teeth are harmless but you do get scratched up. Some "noodlers" have drowned when they get caught underwater and can not get back up.

yupyup, I had neighbores that did it illegally and said it worked better then stinky cheese and stuff...personally I'd fear getting my fingers cut up my the boney gill covers or getting stuck by that likely spine they have in their fins...
