Video: Landing a 747-400 at San Francisco Airport

These videos are probably only for those people who are interested in planes. The videos (10 mins each) seem to be official videos from Virgin Atlantic showing a Boeing 747-400 landing at SFO. The videos start at around 50 miles from SFO and shows in some detail the checks that need to be made, the communication with ATC and the procedures after landing.

And for those that are really interested, here are the videos showing the takeoff from London Heathrow (part 1, part 2, part 3 (actual takeoff), part 4)

45 Million Year Old Beer

A tiny colony of yeast trapped inside a Lebanese weevil covered in ancient Burmese amber for up to 45 million years, has been brought back to life in barrels of beer.

Emeritus Professor Raul Cano of the California Polytechnic State University, originally extracted the yeast a decade ago and has used the reactivated yeast to brew barrels of pale ale and German wheat beer.

According to beer reviewers, the beer has "a weird spiciness at the finish" which is due to the ancient yeast's unique metabolism. Link

Spider Eats Snake

The Cairns Post has got some photos of a redback spider dining on a 14cm long snake. The photos were taken by a receptionist of an electrical firm who spotted it when she got into work.

Batman, Turkey

I spotted this town in an atlas last night and despite its name, it has nothing to do with the comic book superhero.

Batman (short for Batı Raman Mountains) is the provincial capital of Batman Province, Turkey and is an important oil producing area (Batman has Turkey's oldest refinery, established in 1955). [via]

The Punk Turtle

This Mary River turtle was spotted in Australia and bares a striking resemblance to a punk rocker. The turtle, which is on the brink of extinction, is one the most unusual species in the world because it breathes through lung-like structures in its tail. The green 'mohawk' is actually just green algae. [via]

Man Sues Doctors After Penis Amputated

A man is suing a hospital after he awoke from a procedure without his penis.

Philip Seaton, 61, went to have a circumcision last October as part of treatment for a medical condition. Seaton said when he woke up from the procedure, he realized his penis had been amputated.

Seaton has suffered mental anguish, pain, and has lost the enjoyment of life, according to the lawsuit.

I think most men would agree with that.

The hospital say that during the procedure they found cancer and removed the penis even though the patient had only given consent for a circumcision. Link (video report)

Video: 8 Foot Alien CCTV Prank Generates Immediate Police Response

"To mark the 10th anniversary of CCTV (closed-circuit television) cameras in the UK, which are now ubiquitous, music producer James Sanger staged a prank where he sent an 8 foot alien out to walk around Christchurch Road in Bournemouth, leading to the immediate arrival of 3 police cars." [via]

Chewing Gum Sculpture

Amazingly, this sculpture is made from used chewing cum gum.

Ally Rosenberg got 50 friends to chew a thousand pieces of gum in the school library. The 17-year-old then mixed them together to create the 'skin' for his bust of an old woman's head. [via]

City Beer Store, San Francisco

Image via

I've just discovered the City Beer Store in San Francisco. This store is like a small piece of beer heaven. It's a cross between an off license (liquor store) and a pub and allows you to drink beers in store as well as matching them up with some cheese. And when you are ready to go you can “mix & match” a 6 pack to take with you. Has anyone been there?

The House That Survived Hurricane Ike

Apparently this photo is real. It shows a lone house that managed to survive hurricane Ike which hit the town of Gilchrist, Texas. Roughly 200 houses were destroyed by the hurricane.

The reason why the house survived was because 3 years previously, their old house was destroyed by hurricane Rita. This time around they made sure they built their house to withstand the force of hurricane by placing it on 14 foot high stilts (about 22 feet above sea level).

However, even though the house survived, the interior had been battered by the storm making it uninhabitable and destroying many belongings. Link [via]

ThinkNext has posted some screenshots and videos of Windows 7 (M3 Build 6780). At this stage, there is nothing groundbreaking and 'new features' include a lightweight version of Media Player, the integration of the ribbon UI into WordPad, a more complex calculator, a sticky notes application and no Sidebar (at least not in this build). The only Mahjong I've played is Mahjong Solitaire, which I've only ever known as Mahjong. I didn't realise that it was based on the original Mahjong which I have no idea how to play. This Wikipedia article explains the tiles.

Recent Scenes From North Korea

I never get tired of seeing pictures of North Korea, the last Stalinist state in the world. Boston.com's Big Picture has posted 32 photos which were all taken within the past six months - some taken from the borders, peering in, others provided by North Korea itself. One of the photographers who supplied photos to Boston.com has got lots more on Flickr. What I find impressive is the size of the roads for the amount of cars in the country (very few). In this photo he explains how people react when they see a car.

In North Korea, you can drive for hours on the highways without crossing any cars. Last time i came, i saw many pedestrians trying to stop our car to come inside. Of course, the guides do not have the right to stop. it was impressive to see all those people standing in the middle of the road as the car arrived very fast.
