New Deep-Sea Species Revealed by Marine Census
8 years into the Census of Marine Life, there have been some amazing discoveries. So far over 5,300 new marine species have been identified. The National Geographic has posted 10 images of some newly found species.
The image above is of a blind lobster that belongs to a rare genus--Thaumastochelopsis--of which there were previously only four known specimens of two Australian species. The exaggerated claw, or cheliped, is likely used to defend itself in skirmishes with other crustaceans.
