The Bird Killers

According to this article on CNN, up to 1 billion birds die every year in the US as a result of flying into glass windows. Daniel Klem Jr., an ornothologist claims that skyscrapers can claim the lives of 200 birds in a single day.

"This is a largely unseen but seriously unappreciated phenomenon and we're starting to take a serious look at it," said Frank Gill, chief scientist for the National Audubon Society.

"Anytime someone tells you there's something really big that you haven't heard of, you think they're crazy," said Carr Everbach, a Swarthmore College engineer.

Everbach's comment about not believing big things that you haven't heard of is very true. I'm not sure if I can believe that such a large number of birds can be killed every year. Surely the roads and pavements around skyscrapers would be littered with dead birds.
