In an article in this week's Online supplement in the Guardian, the author hints at what UK cable companies NTL and Telewest could be offering in the near future to compete with Sky+ (a PVR comparable to Tivo).
Rather than souping up their digital TV decoders to feature a hard disk (although this is an option), both are believed to be working on services that enable users to store programmes on cable companies' servers.
This service could be available in 2005 and allow all cable subscribers to upgrade to the service without having to purchase expensive equipment.
