When asked the question, "recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can’t locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?”, Miss Teen USA contender Lauren Caitlin Upton (Miss South Carolina) responded...
Just incase she lost you after the first sentence, here's a transcript:-
“I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uhmmm, some people out there in our nation don’t have maps and uh, I believe that our, I, education like such as uh, South Africa, and uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, uhhh, our education over here in the US should help the US, uh, should help South Africa, it should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future, for us.”

She's got a point though. I for one am going to start a charity drive to give Americans maps. Though you know what they say:
"Give an American a map and he'll find his way for one day - give an American a cartography set and he'll probably poke himself in the eye and start a war against Greece."

I worked up a nice map of her response. With so many stops to connection trains it just needed it.
Click my name link below for the image. The long-ish URL wouldn't fit here.

How exemplary of the US government education system! People like this young lady are our future, folks. You have to be proud.
Do you want French fries with that?

Another pretty face without any underlying substance. Probably will grow up to marry a physician.

She was probably really really nervous...combined with being not so bright. Poor girl :( at least she has her looks.

Morning Toast, that is just brilliant. I was already laughing heartily from Crunkfish's hilarious "give a man a fish" comment, but the map took me over the edge.
Weeping with laughter at my little desk.
I still feel bad for the poor thing - it's the sheer genius of the commentors on this page that's giving me hope for the world.

One fith of the American population? Doent that number corrolate with the exact number of people that make up the State of South Carolina?
Posted by: JESSE | Monday, August 27, 2007 at 08:18 PM
No all of us in South Carolina are not stupid. However, we all are attractive people, if thats what you are asking. If that would have been my question I would have said "I personally believe that a fifth of the US can't find the United States on a map because they are blind. Thank you"
Posted by: No we are not all like that | Monday, August 27, 2007 at 09:01 PM
Oh, bless her heart.

Fish, jeb bush's real name is John Ellis Bush. So their is no "W". So either way, the comment is wrong.

WAY TO GO USA!!! Another ignorant dumb american! =D
*sigh* What did you expect? The fact that she's from South Carolina says it all. For the past decade South Carolina comes last in SAT exams, and half of all high school students become drop outs. The stats are all there.

Wow, that survey must have been taken in a special ed. room. I can understand if you can't find Moldova or even anything east of Germany as far as Europe goes. Maybe even not knowing where exactly some of the Latin and South American countries are, but who can miss the US with its cock (Florida) out for the rest of the world to see?
Posted by: TheMcNasty | Tuesday, August 28, 2007 at 04:29 AM
News Flash - Our special ed. students in SC may not be as physically attractive as Miss Upton, but I can assure you they are consistently much brighter and more articulate. Amazingly enough, with fewer opportunities to participate in pageants than Miss Upton (or to master blogging on the internet as have many of you), special ed. students typically can(and do) locate the United States on maps.
