there is one particular place on cephlapods like octopus which when bitten renders them unconcious or dead. my guess is that is what he is doing although with one that side it is probably extremely painful to have their suckers pulling on you like that. you have to also be careful as they have a beak like a bird for a mouth and on one that size it could cause a fair amount of damage.
