It's common knowledge that fisherman can earn a fortune but giant haul made by a group of Alaskan fishing boats last week surprised fishermen, regulators and seafood processors alike.
In just one afternoon, 8 to 10 boats hauled 10,000 tons of sac roe herring and at $550 a ton it works out at around $5.5 million dollars. That's $500,000 per boat! Link
thats it! I'm dropping out of SU, where do i sign up?

I guess Rob is not a math major. There is a HUGH difference between $500,00 per hour and $500,000 per boat!!!
Yes, each boat earns $550,000 but you have to subtract the operating cost of the boat, the owners 50% share of profits, the Captain and senior deck hands higher rate of pay and THEN you take remaining dollars and split that amongst the crew.
In the long run, the crew is probably earning several hundreds of dollars per hour for working in extreme conditions that kills or maims many fishermen.
I will gladly take my $125,000 per year, supervise a bunch of hard workers and have a happy home.
Trade jobs - NOT!!

@Peter - You're right, maths is not my strong subject - it makes my brain hurt. That aside, the boats are still taking $550,000 in net sales but not in profit - I think. Accounting is not a strong subject of mine either (I pay someone for that ;o)
